How a Pressure Switch Works
This part plays an important duty as your furnace prepares to warm your space.
Here’s what goes on after your thermostat’s call for heat:
- Your furnace’s control board commences running the draft inducer blower motor. This drains combustion gases from the heat exchanger and moves in new gas and air so the burners can fire.
- When the pressure switch senses that plenty of air is being pulled into the burners, it closes and signals the control board to ignite the furnace.
- Your furnace ignites and provides heat.
What Happens When a Pressure Switch Malfunctions
When your pressure switch isn’t operating promptly, you’ll likely hear the fan run and the switch clicking a few times before the furnace shuts down completely. When a part isn’t performing right, your furnace will turn off as a safety precaution.
Your furnace will show you something is wrong with a red flash from its indicator light, which it uses to exhibit error codes. It uses this red light to flash code, like Morse code.
You may notice fast flashes or an alternating slow flash as it transmits a fault code.
