4 Tips to Prep for Air Conditioning Season

Summer may feel like it’s still a few months away. But before you blink, you’ll be moving from heating to cooling. Soon enough your air conditioner is running frequently to maintain cool temperatures. It’s beneficial to prep for the extra usage before temperatures get warmer.

Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning and our team of Experts can help. We’ve designed our detailed air conditioning memberships to increase your system’s energy efficiency and trustworthiness. Our professional experience goes a long way, but there are lots of other tasks you can do to protect your air conditioner. Here are four of the top ways you can prepare for air conditioning season.

1. Clean Your Air Conditioner

Don’t worry, you won’t have to disassemble your system and clean every piece. Our Experts do this during your yearly air conditioning maintenance appointment.

But cleaning the space around your air conditioner will go a long way also. We suggest:

  • Removing twigs, leaves and grass clippings from the outside of your air conditioner.
  • Keeping neighboring grass and plants cut back.
  • Maintaining at minimum 1 foot of free room on all sides around your air conditioner.

If your air conditioner’s fins get full of dirt or yard refuse, this can decrease performance and comfort. Your air conditioner will have to run more often to give the same level of comfort. In bad cases, it could stop running altogether and need air conditioning repair

Your comfort and satisfaction matter to us, so we prefer minimizing the need for repairs in the first place. A regularly serviced air conditioner typically operates more efficiently, is less likely to need repairs and usually lasts longer.

2. Change Your Air Filter

Frequently replacing your air filter is crucial for your air conditioner’s well-being. During a tune-up visit, our pros examine filters and install new ones if necessary. Putting in a new filter is fast and simple. You can (and should) do it on your own when possible!

How regularly you need to install a new filter depends on:

  • The kind of filter you use.
  • If someone in your house has asthma, allergies or other respiratory problems.
  • If you have pets.

Basic flat filters usually last for 30–60 days. Deeper pleated filters can last up to 90 days. If you’re not sure if your filter should be replaced, take it out, and hold it up to the light. Put in a new one if you can’t see light through it.

Filters remove dust, pollen and other contaminants from your home’s air, keeping airflow fresh. Disregarding it will lower your house’s indoor air quality and your air conditioner’s efficiency.

In some situations a blocked filter may even damage your system or cause it to break down. Frequently putting in a new one will keep the inside of your air conditioner cleaner and airflow more consistent.

If someone in your home suffers from allergies, asthma or other respiratory issues, check with our Experts about how a HEPA filter can relieve symptoms.

3. Check Your Thermostat and Smoke Detectors

Now is a great time to test other essential parts of your air conditioner and other safety systems.

If you rely on a programmable thermostat, check that it’s working correctly. If the batteries are running low, change them.

For more control and convenience, think over getting a smart thermostat. They make conserving energy less complicated. And select models can even alert you if there’s trouble with your air conditioner or if your air filter needs replacement.

Although they’re not part of your air conditioning system, now is a good time to inspect the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Making sure they’re still good gives peace of mind and an extra layer of protection.

4. Keep Heat Outdoors

One of the smartest ways to enhance energy-efficient cooling is to decrease the level of outdoor heat coming into your home. Using premium window treatments including blackout curtains, honeycomb shades or plantation shutters, can stop the sun from impacting your home’s temperatures.

Here are a couple other methods to keep your house cool without adjusting the thermostat:

  • Run ceiling fans when you’re in the room.
  • Turn on your bathroom fan to eliminate heat and humidity when you shower.
  • Keep air vents uncovered to ensure proper airflow.
  • Install caulk and weatherstripping to seal your doors and windows.
